Wiggle Worms Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary
Families all over the Fredericksburg, Virginia area have trusted Wiggle Worms for a decade to meet their part-time, hourly childcare needs. Our customers are the backbone of our operation, and we are so thankful for their patronage and support over the years!
Wiggle Worms was founded in 2009 by Chrissy Gibbs and Leslie Fisher. Chrissy and Leslie have known each other since high school, and their children are around the same age. One day, Chrissy and Leslie were trying to relax at a local gym’s sauna – their kids were in good hands in the gym’s childcare room, but the moms only had thirty minutes to themselves before they knew the kids had to be picked up. Chrissy and Leslie said to themselves, “If only there was a place to drop off our kids so we could breathe or grab a cup of coffee!” The more they thought about it, the more they wanted to make their idea a reality. They pitched their business proposal to the Spotsylvania Towne Centre. A month passed with no formal response. Then, the mall contacted them and asked, “When can you start?”
A short-term lease was signed, and Chrissy and Leslie began to transform the old Radio Shack store into the first Wiggle Worms location. At that time, Wiggle Worms was the only part-time, hourly drop-off childcare facility in the state of Virginia. Their families and friends were instrumental in getting the store built, and assisted with everything from blueprints, to painting, to creating the first Wiggle Worms logo. As Chrissy has stated, “Wiggle Worms was built on hugs and thank you’s!”
In September 2009, the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star published an article commending the initial success of Wiggle Worms. However, the article noted the short-term lease agreement, and compared Wiggle Worms to experimental pop-up stores. Yet, the article did not recognize the demand for the services that places such as Wiggle Worms offers. Families all over the Fredericksburg area trusted Chrissy, Leslie, and their employees to meet their childcare needs.
Second Location and Licensing
In June 2012, mall management terminated the lease agreement with Wiggle Worms, effectively closing their first location. Faithful customers expressed their support in re-opening the facility, as they have trusted Wiggle Worms for their childcare needs for nearly three years. Parents also took to social media, and created the Facebook group “Save Wiggle Worms”.
The mall offered a new lease for Wiggle Worms in a different location in the mall. This time, the store would occupy a space in the Macy’s corridor. At this time, Chrissy Gibbs assumed sole ownership of Wiggle Worms, and started the process of getting the facility licensed by the State of Virginia. Licensure was granted in 2013, and we still abide by the regulations set forth at initial licensing.
Third Location and Expansion of Services
In November 2017, mall management announced that the lease at our second location was terminating, due to the arrival of H&M at the Spotsylvania Towne Centre. The addition of H&M to the mall gave Wiggle Worms the chance to rebuild in their new location: in the Village at Towne Centre. Being in the Village meant that Wiggle Worms will still be on mall property, but parents would be able to drive up and drop their kids off without having to walk through the mall to find us! We are so grateful to the Cafaro Firm for their continued support, and for allowing Wiggle Worms to flourish in its new location.
Wiggle Worms held their grand re-opening in their third location in March 2018. Along with our standard hourly services, previous programs were expanded, and new ones started! Family Play is now offered two mornings a week. Wonder Worms, a twice-weekly program for preschoolers, encourages learning through sensory play. Jitterbugs, a parent-and-me music class for newborns up to age three, emphasizes physical, cognitive, and social growth in a fun play-based environment. We also offer a Parents’ Night Out (PNO) twice a month, where kids can have pizza and engage in a guided activity. We have partnered with local area businesses to sponsor our PNO activities. Previous sponsors include Paragon Theaters, Macaroni Kid, and Mountain Kim!
Our success depends on the continued support of the families who have trusted us with their childcare needs for over ten years! THANK YOU so much – we couldn’t have done it without you! Come celebrate our 10th Anniversary with us on July 6, 2019, as we host Games on the Green! All fundraising and donations benefit the Fairy Godmother Project and Alex’s Lemonade Stand.
